When Charlie was a puppy, it was impossible to cuddle with him. All he wanted to do was to chomp on our noses and ears with his needle-sharp puppy teeth. After the puppy mouthing/nipping stage, he tolerated cuddling for about a minute at a time, but would soon move to find his own spot at the far corner of the bed or couch--far away from us. We were jealous of other dog owners who said their dogs loved to cuddle and couldn't get enough of it. We assumed we were just fated to have an 'independent'-minded dog who liked his own space.
However, since last fall, Charlie has become more and more cuddly. He now snuggles up to us when we sit on the couch. In fact, he prefers to lie on us rather than by us when he takes a nap. At night, he sleeps at the bottom of our bed, but in the morning, he whimpers softly, asking his mom to lift up the covers so that he can come in and snuggle with her until it's time to get up.
